I am here to elucidate the benefits of a very well known spice in India- and that is our good old ginger. I am sure that there is no such kitchen in India where ginger is not used. Be it Rajma or Upma ginger is used invariably. The distinct taste of this spice not only adds zing to the food but also enhances the goodness of the food.
Ginger is basically the root of the ginger plant. It is used in several forms. It can be used fresh or can be dried and powdered and added to dishes. Personally I like adding freshly grated ginger to buttermilk and raita.
Health Benefits Of Ginger And Ginger Recipes
Ginger has several health benefits and they are as follows:
- Ginger aids digestion and provides relief from heart-burn.
- It is beneficial for people suffering from nausea.
- It is a good remedy for motion sickness.
- It is also a natural pain killer.
- As per studies it prevents Diabetes too.
- It is also known to take active part in cancer prevention.
- Ginger is known to have antibiotic effects.
No wonder our moms stock up the kitchen with ginger! Ginger when consumed in the right quantities and in the correct way can prove to be a boon for us. At this juncture I would like to share a few culinary delicacies involving ginger, which are my personal favorite.
- Ginger lemon drink– Grate ginger ( a small piece) and extract the juice. Add water and add half a lemon to it. Add sugar to taste and a pinch of salt. Serve chilled preferably with crushed ice!
- Pickled ginger- This reminds me of the pink pickled ginger served with sushi that is kind of sweet but I like the Indian version of it (that my mom makes). Cut peeled ginger as wide sticks and squeeze sufficient lemon juice. Add salt to taste ( you would need lots of it!!) and also green chilly pieces if you like it. Keep it under the sun for two days. Voila! It is ready. But you can’t store this for long. So make sure to make little quantities of it. It makes me drool literally. This pickle is something I simply cannot resist. But do keep control over your feelings as it has a lot of salt in it 🙂
- Ginger tea- Grate a little ginger and add it to the boiling water. Add tea dust/leaves. Add milk and allow it to boil. Now strain the tea and add sugar to taste. This is my version of ‘adrak wali chai’, and believe me it tastes really good. I am not much of a tea person but when it comes to ginger tea I definitely take a sip or two.
